Mona ICT Policy Centre

The UWI’s Mona ICT Policy Centre (MICT), organizer of the annual National Cyber Security Conferences, is dedicated to research, analysis, conference-planning and teaching in the areas of ICT policy-making, emerging technology applications and information management services.

Established in 2009 out of the pioneering Telecommunications Policy and Management (TPM) Programme, the Centre regularly hosts ICT-related development conferences, major research projects and industry seminars. Since 2013, MICT has successfully hosted five annual cyber security conferences, technical seminars on e-Gov and Private Sector Modernization, workshops on Data Protection, Data Privacy, Music Promotion and strategies for the Creative Industries under the heading of Managing Your Digital Future. The Centre also hosts commemorative annual panel discussions to mark World Telecommunications and Information Society Day.

Through its various research projects and partnerships, the Centre also seeks to build a culture of research and knowledge sharing in Information and Communications technologies (ICTs) through the engagement of youth, emerging scholars and sector specialists. Its mission is to “become a hub for world-class training, research and consultancy in Telecommunications, ICT Policy making and Technology Management in the Caribbean”.

The Centre operates under the guidance of an Advisory Committee of industry experts. Its founding Director is Professor Hopeton Dunn.

CARIMAC

The Caribbean School of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) was started in 1974 out of a recommendation by the United Nations Economic, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and a subsequent partnership between the University of the West Indies and the German foundation called Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES).

In August 2017, CARIMAC was re-branded from an institute to become the Caribbean School of Media and Communication. This repositioning was a reflection of its continued growth and regional reach. The School was created to give regional communicators a Caribbean educational orientation with a strong professional grounding while facilitating skills development in the areas of media and communication.
